To quote author Garrett Hongo, who appears elsewhere in Planet Hawaii, "Hawaii is a sort of layered culture in many ways. It's America. It's a post colonial small island republic; it's an outpost of Asia; it is the highly capitalized capitol of Polynesia. It represents encroachment from Western capitalism into non-cash economies. I mean, it's an incredibly complex place. It's a hybrid, it's a crossroads, it's the Silk Road. It's also the most Balkanized, bowdlerized, abridged, interrupted place in the Pacific."

To that, we'd like to add that it's also a great place to shop and have fun.
