Moretti Brothers make it two from two at Sandy Bay

The second event of the Northland Scholastics Surfing Series was held in small, onshore 1-2 ft waves at Sandy Bay on Sunday 23rd May. Challenging onshore conditions provided the 25 contestants with the opportunity to prove their skills with wave selection being the integral part of the day.

The Bodyboard final saw the Williams brothers fighting for the top position, with Dayne (Whangarei Boys High) taking the second events title off brother, Regan (Kamo High School).

In the Boys Under 14 division Matt McGregor (Kamo High School) showed his skills by picking off the best waves and surfing them with style, taking out the division. Joe Palmer (Keri Keri High School) showed promise but came short against Matt's determination and wave selection. It was also good to see Rhys Whittaker (Bream Bay College) make his first final of the series surfing against some of New Zealand's top juniors.

The Boys Under 16 division proved another tight battle between Mimiwhangata's Paul Moretti and Patxi Scott-Arietta (Kamo High School). Both boys demonstrated strong surfing, and Patxi's local knowledge was evident but not enough to claim victory over event ones winner, Paul.

The Boys Under 18 division saw a straight final and an increase in swell allowing the contestants more waves to fight it out. Taking out the division was Joe Moretti with strong maneuvers in the most critical part of the waves. Showing his stuff was local boy Darcy Bowden coming in second place.

Big thanks must go to North Coast Board Riders for all their support in running the event and making sure there was shelter from the on shores, and a hot sausage in hand! Also massive thanks to Megasurf and West, for providing our winners with prizes and Sport Northland for supporting surfing in Northland. Finally a huge thanks to competitors and parents for a great day of surfing.
