Once used as a bombing practice range by the Navy and Marine Corps., Kaho'olawe is currently under going a federally-funded clean-up of unexploded ordinance as well as an effort to restore what remains of the island's cultural heritage.

Once called Kanaloa after the goddess of the island, Kaho'olawe was also known as Kohemalamalama (the southern beacon) and was the site of many sacred heiau (temples of worship and sacrifice). Kaho'olawe was used by the ancient Hawaiians as a site to train navigators for long distance expeditions across the Pacific. On Lua Makika, a minor volcano, an enormous stone quarry once used by the residents of the island is still in evidence today. While some ancient sites survive, many others were destroyed.

The state now strictly enforces a 2-mile offshore no fish zone, and Kaho'olawe is off limits to all but military personnel and native Hawaiians most of the year.
