Formed some six million years ago, the island of Kaua'i encompasses roughly 550 miles and is the oldest and most northerly of the main Hawaiian Islands. Early on, it was called "the separate kingdom" because it is the only island that wasn't conquered by Kamehameha the Great, and became part of the unified Hawaiian kingdom through negotiation.

To visit Kaua'i is to quickly lose yourself in the quiet majesty of the island's lush tropical setting. No surprise, then, that Steven Speilberg selected it as a location for filming Jurassic Park, or that dozens of other film makers before and after him have also selected it for location shooting.

Of course, there's a lot more to Kauai than a jungle look and a place in movie history. If you visit, you'll want to drive to Waimea Canyon, often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. For golfers, a visit to Poipu Bay Resort is certainly in order. It is the site of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, one of the toughest tournaments to qualify for and to win. Champions from the world's four major golf events vie for a million dollar purse. The 1997 competitors who have qualified this year are the winners of the Master's (Tiger Woods), the U.S. Open (Ernie Els), the British Open (Justin Leonard), the PGA Championship (Davis Love III). Spectators are welcome.
