Lana'i was once almost entirely pineapple plantations. Today, it is home to two luxury resorts--The Manele Bay Hotel and the Lodge at Koele. As pineapple production has slowly closed down, virtually the entire island economy--and many of the residents--have been refocused to support these two resorts.

A few years ago the island attracted considerable media attention when Bill Gates selected it as the location for his wedding. On that day, there was not a room, suite, or rental car available. But then, there really wasn't any need for any of those, because neither was there any way to get to Lanai. The island was virtually closed down for the private party, which caused more than a little grumbling among the media who, somehow, had been left off the guest list.

Lanai's two resorts are spectacular, and they include some of the finest golf courses you're ever likely to play. However, unless you're headed to one of those, it might not be a bad idea to head to a different island where you've got some options.
